Our position in the world

Throughout history, the positions that people have held in society have played a big role.  When we consider the identities of people, we look at several aspects of their lives.  By understanding where they live, we can determine several characteristics about their current living situations.  In page 500 of our book, several examples of natural disasters, such as the 2004 New Orleans flood and the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, show how we can determine the areas of the world that are going through devastation at a given time.
When considering society, our position in the world is largely based upon the society we grow up in and how culture accepts the way we are.  By achieving a higher education, you can easily receive a higher position in society by having an advantage in the work force.  On the contrary, some celebrities establish themselves as important figures in society by doing something different or special that not everyone can do.  However, some people are never given the opportunity to establish themselves as "upper class" due to being born in poverty.  Throughout Ch. 14 it gives examples of people born into poverty and shows the efforts that people are making in order to help these people out.  Ch. 14 also discusses the irony that is displayed in the faces of the wealthy people promoting relief for people involved in natural disasters.  By having children smiling, they really don't understand the situation at hand and it generally shows the lack of understanding in the people promoting the relief.
Considering culture in our society, the position in which we are born a lot of times determines who we associate with.  By being raised among a certain "class" or "type" we become accustomed to our type of people and do not consider the needs or ideas of other people.  This can be considered bad when it comes to supporting people in horrible financial/health situations across the globe or just across the U.S.  We need to keep in mind the people that need our support, which also includes our troops.
